Should there be a Blacknight Blog?

March 4, 2006 by Michele Neylon 8 Comments

Anyone who visits this blog more than once is probably aware of who I am and some people would consider this blog to be the “official” Blacknight blog.
I’ve always disagreed with that, though I fully understand why people get that feeling.
While speaking to a client, and fellow blogger, the other week it was brought home to me that while this blog maybe visible to those “in the know” it obviously isn’t as visible as a blog attached to the main Blacknight website.
My counter-argument to that was the one I have always used ie. that this blog is more a reflection of my personal eclectic interests and opinions than a soapbox for the company. While he did agree with me he also pointed out that there could be some advantages in running a separate company blog.
I’m still undecided
What do others think?

To be honest, I’ve never thought of it as the official Blacknight blog. Sure you mention offers and such the odd time but most of it is tech related posts in general.
You can’t really be responsible for people thinking that this is the Blacknight blog but I don’t think you’ve done much to encourage that view. Sure only last week I had a dublin.ie user comment on my blog about how he was trying to contact me in work. It wasn’t the first comment of that nature so I put him straight.

I think this blog works well. It’ll probably be more genuine than a Blacknight specific blog. Genuine in terms of being more human and less talk about DNS and ICANN etc. I like the mix of business, geekery and “other”.

I found this blog before blacknight.ie
Im not totally sure what else you would put in a purely business blog. There is definately a more human element here, and you combine it with business sometimes too.

Phil – But would we want to link this blog to the blacknight.ie domain?
If this blog were linked directly to the Blacknight site would I still be able to talk about random topics that interest me?

Michele – If you were to link this blog to blacknight I would not be so inclined to use it for personal interest too. Not that your personal interests are not great to read, but you know what happened with Alan over at spoiltchild when he wrote a “critique” about a competitor.
Would a blacknight only blog with some of the relevant content from here duplicated be a more sensible approach?

Ed – if there was a blacknight blog it would not be my personal stuff. It would be more company news etc., with relevant posts from here possibly duplicated and / or adapted

As a customer of Blacknight I’d appricate an Offical blog. News coming through my rss feed is quickly becoming more useful than updates through email, which can get more easily lost in the pile. I’d prefer the ‘offical’ blog to focus on service and company info while your personal blog dealt with other stuff. It wouldn’t have to be anything more than what appears in the News section really.

Perhaps it would work well to have two; one that is directly linked from the blacknight site that focuses on the company itself and industry news that directly impacts upon it.
This blog could then become a personal view on the industry, and would ocntinue to contain bits and bobs that you happen upon during the day.
