Irish Mobile Operator With Sane Roaming In Serbia and Montenegro?

I just got back from Montenegro last night.

I’d a great time (check out the photos!), but I was really hampered by not having data either in Serbia or Montenegro

Vodafone have a network in Serbia, but for some stupid reason I didn’t have 3G roaming with them. No idea why.

Once I landed in Montenegro I ended up without any data at all.

This is really really annoying.

I’m going back to the region again in September and I *need* to have data as I will be working from there for several days.

So which Irish mobile operators have proper roaming agreements with Serbia and Montenegro and can give me data in both countries?

In Serbia there’s 3 operators: mt:s, Telenor and Vip mobile, while in Montenegro you have also 3 – m:tel, Telenor and T-Mobile.

If you from Serbia to MNE, from mt:s you’d go to m:tel, because it’s a child company, but you wont have free minutes, messages or anything else that comes in your plan, no matter if it’s pre or post paid.
From Telenor you’d probably go to Telenor.

There is no Vodafone, except partnership in Serbia with Vip mobile, and T-Mobile in Montenegro, but you would still be (over)charged when it comes to roaming.
I’m not sure about other phones, but my iPhone lost 3G as soon as I was in Montenegro, but that’s precaution set in Settings/General/Network – Data Roaming, since you’d probably get a nice bill if phone starts pulling mails or starts loading maps images…

Long story short, last summer I used my old iPhone with prepaid card from m:tel, added 5euro for 10GB of traffic and created a personal hotspot for my other devices.

    Hope this helps a bit.

You could try Maxroam (www.maxroam.com). This provides international roaming at set prices. Although I don’t know whether you can keep your mobile number (i.e. you buy a SIM, therefore, I think that means a new number). However, you might be able to redirect/forward your mobile to the Maxroam number (maybe ask them?)
