Unlimited Hosting Is For Fairies

Do you believe in fairies?

Do you think they live down the bottom of your garden?

If you do, then you might believe the “unlimited hosting” offer in this month’s PC Live! magazine

Until someone gets round to inventing an unlimited hard drive it is pretty much impossible to offer unlimited disk space and unlimited bandwidth and of course anyone who tries to “take advantage” of an unlimited plan is bound to be “in breach”…

    Hi Michele,
I have a sneaking suspicion that they have been listening to:

I kind of like to think of “Unlimited Hosting” as limited hosting, but with the added fun of having to go through the eight thousand page long Terms of Service agreement to ACTUALLY find your quota, When as you could buy a €4.95 Minimus package from Blacknight and get to know exactly what your quotas are.

We see this in online backup too.
Marketing ploy which makes viable clients (those who actually use very little space) feel future proofed and special. Those who do try to utilize an unexpected quantity of this infinite space find themselves limited by contract and connectivity.
Not sure how much sympathy I have for those who get caught by such ridicilous marketing ploys..

Allow me to offer example. My ex-current hosting is in america at the moment (www.bluehost.com). They have unlimited file transfer and unlimited file space.
However, try installing a PHP intensive application on it. Even net2ftp struggled where there was numerous users on it currently (e.g. three) – the site just buckled.
And why? Of course I got onto live chat and asked why? I was told that it was because my package could only allow 3 PHP processes at once.
So, wherever you see this “unlimited symbol” have my advice and don’t sign up to them. It’s cowboy behavior. And if you do sign up to Bluehost, be sure to send me an email and I’ll give you a referrer code. :p
