Irish Retailers Don’t Get The Web

October 17, 2007 by Michele Neylon 7 Comments

Getting a high quality website designed and developed is not cheap. If you want it done properly you will need to deal with professionals and professionals do not come cheap.

A lot of people may find the competition being run by a multi-million euro shopping centre an insult. Blanchardstown Shopping Centre (on the outskirts of Dublin city, Ireland) are running a competition to get their site revamped.

A couple of things about the way they’re running it strike me as odd:

  1. The prize money is only 1000 euro. You wouldn’t expect to get a small brochure site designed for that money these days
  2. The competition is sponsored by Bank of Ireland. So they’re only paying out 1000 euro and they’re too cheap to even pay that themselves?

Maybe I’m missing something, but it strikes me as yet another instance of Irish business not “getting” the ‘net

Maybe they’re hoping a first year design student will be blinded by the huge price and the interest generated by designing such a prestigious site? €1000 buys a lot of pints!
I’ll be the first to admit that I’m absolutely and utterly rubbish at graphical design, but I’m sure that I could come up with something that would look better than the current website. I wonder if ripe.ie have a template for this? For the cost of €50 and a couple of hours tweaking, I reckon I could be in with a chance 🙂

That €1000 won’t buy many pints, as it’s €1000 of blanchardstown shopping centre vouchers, not cash.
Still, it could be a good project for a student, as something to add to their portfolio, not for the potential win…

I think I’ll just buy a template for 20 bucks, just change the labels and submit that as my entry

Irish Retailers Don’t Get The Web

Michele’s just come across the ultimate in cheapness. Rather than pay professionals to design their new website for them, Blanchardstown Shopping Centre are running a competition instead. They’ve got the Bank of Ireland to sponsor a prize …

Why would you spend the 20 quid when you might not even win? Besides, the terms of the competition are that they get full exclusive use rights to the winning entry. Places like Templatemonster.com want extra (usually $2,000+) if you want exclusive rights.

    He he,
For that price I wouldn’t even bother reading the competition leaflet.
