Damien linked to a site that talks about the high costs of locall numbers for many users.
David posted about this some time ago and there were several interesting comments on that article.
We are based outside Dublin, so for a lot of people there still is the mental block with ringing an 059 number instead of an 01 or a region free 1850 / 1890
We’ve thought about the 1800 number long and hard, but we can’t really justify it.
The problem as I see it is a catch 22.
If you use a 1800 number it’s hard to limit who uses it ie. restricting it to sales calls only.
If you use an 1850 / 1890 some people seem to end up paying more for the calls.
Of course we do publish our “normal” 059 number on the site, so anyone who wants to can use that …
But if we were to start marketing based on the 059 number would we lose business?
Dave Davis says
Michele, you can use skype to get a cheap local Irish number and restrict the 1800 number only to sales.

Why not just get a 01 number an reroute to your office using VoIP?
Michele Neylon says
Dave – I’m not too sure I’d want to rely on Skype for running a business 🙂
Dominykas – the issue I see with an 01 number is that people will presume that we’re in Dublin, which is not something I want them to do.

I have a package from Eircom where all local and national calls are free [up to 59 minutes].
If I used your ‘Lo-call’ number, it would actually cost me [albeit at the local rate] but the 059 number doesn’t cost a penny. So here is someone who appreciates the 059 number!

Hi Michelle,
You can get a 0818 number that will work out far more cost effective for you..
0818 is similar to 1890 or 1850 however it is not a shared cost line, instead it is billed as a national call rate, and given that many customer will be dialing either from a mobile in which case local/national are no different, or from landline..
