Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been focussed on both sorting out issues with the new house and moving my stuff into it. The proverbial light is now visible at the end of the tunnel. If everything goes according to plan I’ll be finally moving in to my new abode this weekend. I’ll still have to spend a few days sorting out the outstanding bits and bobs, but my “plan” is to get in there by Saturday night. Fingers crossed! So far the entire “moving house” project has been fun, although a little exasperating at times.
So over the last couple of days I’ve been trying to update my contact details with various organisations and companies that I deal with.
Some have been very easy to deal with. I’ve been able to login or send an email with my new home address and they’ve updated their records accordingly.
Others, however, are a bit more awkward and generally messy to deal with. With one company, for example, their online system kicks me out every single time I try to update my account details! Others require you to print off forms or write them letters, which means that you don’t get instant gratification!
I drew up a list of entities that would need to be contacted and I’ve been working my way up and down that list, while also adding to it, over the last few weeks. The Citizens’ Information site has a pretty good list of things to update, along with instructions for quite a few of them.
I’ve no idea if this list will be of any use to others, but here’s a list that I’ve been working with:
- bank(s)
- credit cards (while they might be with the bank you use on a daily basis it’s best to check that they’ve updated your address everywhere)
- utilities (electricity, gas, phone)
- Broadband provider – in my case this is a cancellation, as I’ve switched over to our own ISP
- Cable TV provider – again, for me this was a cancellation
- Insurance company(s) – house, car, health etc.,
- Business bank – I’ve found that even within the same bank they often keep different sets of records, so making sure that they’ve updated the records everywhere doesn’t hurt
- Clubs and other member organisations that I’m involved with
- Frequent flier schemes
- Hotel loyalty schemes
- Electoral register
- TV license – you can do this online easily. The “pin” is printed on the license.
- Bin / rubbish collection. I’ve no idea how they all operate, but AES will move or replace my bins for the new location.
- Domain names and other digital services. While most of them don’t send you physical mail my whois details have been used in the past for sending me “nastygrams” 🙂
I’m sure I’ll have overlooked something or somebody, so I signed up for the An Post (Irish postal service) address redirection service. Tip: If you’re going to use it you need to signup for it at least two weeks before you plan to move. Their signup process is both online and offline. You can fill out all your details online and pay them, but you will need to print off the forms and send the signed form into them. I sent my paperwork in today and they should be sending me out activation details within the next week or so.
Now back to that snag list …
