US Immigration – Not So Painful

January 28, 2007 by Michele Neylon 6 Comments

I just made it through the US immigration thing in Dublin Airport.
It was incredibly simple and the staff were really civil. I’ve been stopped at several borders in the past, so I nearly always expect the worse (when you’ve had your bags pulled apart a few times this sense of paranoia tends to grow)
I’m now waiting to board my flight to LA…
It’s handy having wireless broadband, though it’s a pity that it’s not a bit cheaper … €5 / hour is quite high if you’re hanging around for a couple of hours (you have to check in 3.5 hours in advance)
I’ve no idea how busy this flight is going to be.. as long as I don’t end beside some nutjob I won’t care (I’ve an awkward habit of attracting the weirdos)

Polite? You were lucky! Look what happened to me back in 2003. Thankfully every other time travelling has been a piece of cake in comparision.

You should share stories of the words you uttered when questioned. There are lessons to be learned in what you tell immigration.
For example, never admit to being a journalist off to cover an event. In my experience, I’ve found it’s better to say you’re on a short holiday and if you have the name of your destination hotel written on the back of your return ticket, you’re rarely subjected to a longer line of quesitoning.

    > Sorry MR Neylon, we cannot allow you entry. You are on a list.
    > What list?
    > A list.
    > What does it say on the list?
    > Nothing.
    > Can i see this list?
    > What list?
    > The list you just said i am on.
    > There is no list.
    > So can i go.
    > Sorry MR Neylon, we cannot allow you entry. You are on a list.

US immigration has been a concern of mine for quite some time. I am American and my wife is from Venezuela… so I am very familiar with the racial profiling that occurs when crossing US Borders. This country is far from being the “land of the free”. I created a 5 minute short film that deals with the anxiety and frustration created when passing through US Customs.
