As regular readers of this blog know, I have a certain place in my heart for Montenegro. It’s a fantastic country and the people are wonderful.
However in common with a lot of developing economies Montenegro faces a challenge.
The government and people of Montenegro need to make a decision on their destiny and future.
Yet again today I came across an article about a proposed development in Montenegro’s popular coastal area.
It’s a gorgeous area of the world. But if the locals don’t recognise their own assets soon they run the risk of losing them all. Today’s article in Bloomberg talks of a potential development with a value of $242 million. That’s a significant investment and the local economy could benefit from it.
But at what price?
The coastal area of Montenegro is fantastic, but if it’s allowed to be developed too heavily it will quickly lose its attraction.
Of course it’s easy for me as a foreigner to be judgemental. I don’t live there.
But we’ve all seen how easy it is to trade in natural beauty in the name of a few jobs.. future generations will probably curse us!
