Alchohol Free Day – Why?

April 14, 2006 by Michele Neylon 8 Comments

Why is it against the law to sell alcohol on Good Friday in Ireland?
Can anyone explain it to me?

How can that even be constitutional considering that the Catholic church was removed from the constitution ….

    Looks good for the government!
Still, there’ll be a string of nightclubs and pubs around the country that will open their doors once it hits midnight…

In this day and age it is bizarre, but probably not actually constitutional.

    Sorry, I meant unconstitutional. 🙂

Well, in South Louisiana, where I’m from, you can’t buy liquor or wine on Sundays, and you can only buy beer after noon. After checking into it, it dates back to the “olden days.” It was contrived as a way to ensure drunks had to go to church at least on Sunday to get their wine, basically.
I can’t believe you guys have the pubs shut down on public holidays, either. I’m just glad my trip into IE doesn’t happen to include any!

Jmarsh – Only Good Friday 🙂
Most other holidays are the exact opposite

    Because religion dictates all. Unfortunately.
