If you want to run your own business then you need to work at it.
You cannot expect your business to run itself.
You cannot expect to work “normal” hours.
You cannot expect to work a “normal” working week
If you can’t deal with any of the above then simply give up now.
Sure, everyone needs to strike the balance between work and their private life
However, if you’re running your own business you need to realise that you cannot think like an employee (conversely your employees won’t think like you do either, but that’s another discussion)
True, and let us not forget that the converse is true…
If someone is just an employee they should not have to work 24/7 and so on.
Why exactly would you want any of that? What are the advantages of running your own business, over being an employee?

It’s obviously not suited to everyone, but I’d find it very hard to go back to being a “cog” in a corporate wheel

Not every employee is a cog in a corporate wheel. I know I wouldn’t enjoy that either. But I am perfectly happy to be paid for being creative and solving problems, for being asked for and giving input into projects, but also to have guaranteed time to myself completely away from that, all the while letting other people (AKA the boss) handle problems like finding new clients, chasing down people who don’t want to pay bills, and handling awkward clients. I cannot imagine enjoying those aspects of being the boss in any shape or form. Obviously it depends on the job, the work field and the size and structure of the company.
Having worked for too many plonkers in the past I decided that I would become the plonker.
It works better this way.
Did you ever sit there and listen to your boss just waffle because he is the boss and then comprehend why GIs shot themselves in the foot so that they could go home.
Did you ever feel like throwing your plonker boss out the window because he is a plonker but didn’t, because you are on the ground floor.
Did you ever do 100 excellent things and then one thing that didn’t go so well and get remembered for that one thing.
Do you hate company/tea room politics.
If you have answered Yes to these and 1,000 other questions not listed then it is time to become your own Boss and not the Employee.
