2016 was yet another crazy year for travel for me. I clocked up nearly 250 thousand km over the year!
So where the hell was I?
This map shows it all:
A lot of the flights were to the US, which is fairly normal, as there a lot of events over there.
2016 was also the year my sister tied the knot in Bali, which was a wonderful trip. It was also one of the longer ones.
For 2017 I suspect my travel schedule will be quite a bit lighter overall. There are several reasons for this:
- some events clash with each other (I’ve yet to master being in two places at once, though I had to try a few times in 2016)
- some events changed their dates or locations so they’re no longer viable. For example, in 2016 I went to INTA in Orlando and then on to WHD USA in Arizona. I was already in the US for one event, so adding another wasn’t that hard or expensive. In previous years I’ve been able to attend CES in Vegas and stay on for NamesCon. In 2017 there’s quite a big gap between the two events, so I’ll attend CES but not NamesCon.
- some events simply aren’t worth attending. I attend a broad variety of events across the globe. It might seem like I’m attending “everything”, but in reality I’m quite picky. I will, however, attend an event to see if there’s any “value” in it. If there isn’t then I probably won’t attend again.
- I’m going to be focussing the first few months of the year on getting my new house setup the way I want it.
Of course this is all subject to change, so God only knows how things will really pan out in 2017. (I wasn’t planning on going to Paraguay in 2016, but I ended up doing it – and it was a great experience!)
As I currently sit on the GNSO Council at ICANN I will be attending the 3 public meetings in 2017, which will involve one close one, one medium distance location and one long trip.
So far my planned events for the year are listed here.

This is different than the tool you used last year. Where did you make this at?

I used “app in the air” to generate it.
Thanks for your comment
