The Famine Mentality

December 24, 2005 by Michele Neylon 2 Comments

Why is it that anytime there is a bank holiday the shops go crazy?
I can understand that people need to buy their “last minute” Christmas presents etc., but do they really need to buy that much food??? You’d think the shops were closing for a week or two.
On my way out of Carlow the other afternoon we tried to get into the local Tesco, but there was a tailback. Today I ventured over to the new shopping complex in Midleton… Not the best idea I’ve had this week, admittedly, but unfortunately it was necessary.
The place was packed with people hording for the “break”… Considering that most shops will actually be reopening on the 26th or 27th….

Thats exactly what I thought yesterday when I went to get some food for the weekend (a single bag). It took me more than an hour and I am living right next to a Dunnes store. Add another couple of hours for those poor bastards who came by car..
People were stacking up on literally everything. There were people buying several bottles of soap and stuff. I mean, come on! The world wont end after christmas and if it does, who needs soap anyway…

Those who shop at places like Costco tend to purchase larger quantities of stuff, including food so arguably, the number of shopping sprees per week is usually lower.
With good planning, most people should be able to live very well off one visit to the supermarket (or Costco) per week.
Of course, there’s always the last items everyone happens to “need badly” at the very last moment.
    It’s a common human condition to “forget” ; )
