Business blogging is one of those strange concepts that seems to have “appeared” over the last year or so and seems to have captured the public’s imagination.
I don’t really like the fad mentality associated with some of these “movements”. In the technical world you see technologies come and go with each one being hailed as the solution. A few months later the bubble bursts and people move on to the new techie toy having promptly forgotten what the last “big thing” was.
Blogs can be a great way of informing people of new products and services. The problem in my view is getting the balance right – striking a chord somewhere between corporate line and informal information provision.
Alan, of SpoiltChild Design, has launched a second blog, Pinstripe, to do just this and I think he’s doing an admirable job.
On the one hand he’s teasing people about a new product/service that he’s working on, while on the other he’s involved in an information sharing exercise.
His main blog is fantastic if you are interested in design and general eye candy, but probably wouldn’t allow him the scope to discuss business and marketing related matters.
It’s a fine example of how you can successfully run two very different blogs properly.
Cool, thanks for the mention.
I thought long and hard about how to maintain the balance in the blogs then thought feck it! Just do it and work through the mistakes in public. I dont see anything wrong in that so long as you learn from them.
At the very least others will see what not to do 🙂
Alan
I tried splitting off into other blogs, but it didn’t really work for me – I’m glad it seems to work for you
Well it wasnt a case of “I want more blogs”. The spoilt blog is great to run but more and more i wanted to say stuff that just didnt fit there and to be honest probably wouldnt interest most of its audience. So pinstripe was born 🙂
That’s what I was thinking as well. The new blog allows you a lot more scope
