Most bloggers are probably familiar with the concept of “tagging” their content so that systems such as Technorati can pick up on their posts.
Whilst browsing technorati this afternoon I came across a new variant called “Honor Tags” (sic).
The basic concept is that you can help categorise your content using one or more of the 6 available tags
I suppose the idea is that by using these tags you can help people get a better idea of your blog’s content in the context of the wider “blogosphere” (I hate that term).
However, as I may have mentioned in the past, tagging is not automatic, so you need to either setup a specific category for each tag you want to use or jump through other hoops.
I know that WordPress, for example, is more than happy to send out tags for technorati et al via the categories, but most people would probably agree that the category names used by bloggers follow some form of logic.
How would a casual user find a category labelled “HonorTagJournalism”? Wouldn’t that break the usability to a greater or lesser degree?
Usability issues related to blogs have already been identified by the Catalyst Design Group in a recent survey.
Would you really want to make matters worse?
