Helm 4 Is Not Ready

November 16, 2006 by Michele Neylon 14 Comments

Webhost Automation have released Helm 4 but it’s premature.
It’s simply not ready for release.
Who in their right mind releases a hosting control panel that doesn’t support MySQL?
What sane person would leave out modules that are so popular such as Awstats?
Want the answer? Simply click here
They seem to be going down the route that other software vendors have taken of late, namely:
– Announce major update
– Hype major update
– Change licensing
– Launch half-finished product
– Omit previously included modules
– Promise to include omissions when public get annoyed
Their marketing blurb is laughable if you actually know what is going on, like their article on how windows is cheaper than linux (??)
Don’t get me wrong – the software is not bad, but what’s bugging me is their harping on about how “wonderful” v4 is and then releasing it with basic functionality missing…

I rather like helm and plan on running with it in the future for new windows servers I roll out, replacing my previous choice plesk. This release is disappointing however and simply would not work.

A lot of end users like it, but they keep missing out on basic functionality that you really need if you are handling any real volumes

HELM people are the funniest people I have even seen. They sometime do the things wrong way and than keep on justiying. They don’t care what was clients are saying and what they want. They are just bull***t.

Sounds like what they did with Modernbill. Oh look v5 is out but we’re still working on it…

Being a developer I know why these companies get things out as early as they can. Its fustrating as an end user. Looks like I’ll also be waiting for the rest of the modules to come out and also how to write my own, but I can now see the potential of version 4 and what the fuss was about.. Its a clever, powerful system.

Why do I have this niggling suspicion that your opinion isn’t exactly neutral?

I’d admit I am a little bias. I’ve met the guys and talked to them about the new version and hoping to get into writing my own modules for it. I honestly do like what they have done though.

I think you’re missing the big picture though. From their screenshots page: “Even better… everything is skinnable!” See? How could you NOT want it now?

Including their two patch releases without a version number change???
Hostyle – I knew my life was incomplete!

Migrating from Helm to DotNetPanel was the best decision we have made.

    How does it handle SSLs?
The only obvious thing that it seems to be missing is Cold Fusion support…

Did not work, would not uninstall, and I can not remove the registry entry!
I’m keeping good notes and I’ll be posting them on my space. Are you guys sure it’s legit?
