Google Nanny Filter Breaks

January 31, 2009 by Michele Neylon 5 Comments

I don’t like Google or anyone else telling me what sites I should or shouldn’t look at, so when their “nanny filter” broke today I had to giggle.

Doing a search for anything – no matter how “innocent” it might be will get you a page of results that are flagged as “harmful” for your computer.

See what I got when I did a search for “the pope”:

Jeez! I was just talking to a friend about that and read your blog… Absolutely “any search”, even for Google Webmaster tools (??), after you click on any link you get: “Warning – visiting this web site may harm your computer!”

You can do the search for Google.com
It can also harm your computer 🙂

    That’s not a nanny filter, it’s a malware filter. There’s a subtle difference.

    Fred / Mackozer
It was flagging every single site on the internet as being dangerous – including all of their own ones

    Someone got fired for that.
It didn’t last long, but enough to be noticed…
