I originally posted this in 2020, but am updating it for 2024.
I live a lot of my life online.
However I also really like many “offline” things, including Christmas cards. I like sending them and I like receiving them.
I’m odd that way.
I’ve always liked the old Gary Larson Far Side Christmas cards, but they haven’t been produced in years. I’ve bought several sets of the cards over the past couple of years and I love sending them to friends.
But this year I really want to focus on supporting Irish businesses and Irish creators as much as possible. So earlier today I asked on Twitter for recommendations for Irish made or designed Christmas cards.
I got some really good suggestions and here’s a few (updated for 2024):
- PaperBear – gorgeous pop-up cards. I’ve got similar ones from a big US company in the past and they’re the kind of thing that definitely make an impact.
- Karen Flan Art – a nice selection of tongue in cheek cards with an Irish popular culture slant. Think Bosco and Father Ted.
Gilly and Rob – some really funny cards, some might be a little NSFW, but they’re still amusing. Sadly they’re no longer in business- Twisted Doodles – hilarious and often so on point that it’s scary
- Kelly Cards – more traditional, but they have some really gorgeous ones. The Christmas ones help support Alone.
- Peter O’ Toole offers some fun cards for both Christmas and other occasions.
- Bold Bunny have a nice range of quirky cards.
- Prints of Ireland – some nice ones including one dedicated to the Christmas jumper.
- Ciaraíoch Art has a few Christmas cards
- Lainey K do some nice ones
If you want to help a good cause there’s always a few options from the various charities. Personally I like supporting Amnesty whenever I can.
Keep an eye on the mailing cut off dates!
