I’m a little bit annoyed with the way Apple are rolling out the iPhone in Europe.
Earlier today they announced that they had chosen O2 as their exclusive carrier in the UK.
Although they haven’t announced their plans for Ireland yet it wouldn’t surprise me if they were to do the same here.
While I know you can hack it to some degree that’s hardly the point.
If I want to get an iPhone will I be forced to change carrier? I’m not going to change about a dozen or so handsets over from Vodafone to O2 just so I can get an iPhone!

Hi M
I’ve been looking at the iphone in the US just now. Yes it’s a gorgeous piece of design and looks every bit as good as the hype behind it… but in 6 months it’ll be old news.
The thing that really bugs me is the proprietary nature of all the fittings on apple kit and the way, with each new generation of device, all the legacy 3rd party devices cease to be of any use as they won’t work — as i discovered with the 160gb ipod classic. Whilst the fittings are the same the video doesn’t output in the same way as the 5th gen ipods… talk about enforced obsolescence!!
Thou shalt spend more cash on peripherals thou bought previously.

R,
You’re right, the current iPhone will be old news in 6 months but it would be a mistake to think that “iPhone v2 or v3” will be old news.
The peripherals argument is a different story. Apple is standarding on the dock port for video because they want to offer component rather than S-Video/RCA.
I’m probably the biggest Apple fanboy I know – and I’m holding off on the iPod. I don’t want to switch carrier (well, I do, but I don’t want to YET).
Crying foul because they haven’t made it the way you want it is tough tittie! Apple only does laptops in Black, White and Silver. They only do desktops in mini, iMac and Pro. By their nature they can’t please everyone so they try and please the most important people:
Shareholders.
