Alternative to The Gimp on Windows?

January 15, 2007 by Michele Neylon 15 Comments

I’ve been using the Gimp on both Windows and Linux for the last year, as I live in fear of the license police πŸ™‚
However I am increasingly frustrated with the Gimp and want an alternative. Something that is easy to use and has a UI that is actually user friendly.
I like PhotoShop and Fireworks….
Any recommendations??

I couldn’t see much difference, though that maybe because I already had the Gimp installed

What about paint.net? I’ve never tried it, but I’ve heard some remarkably good things about it.

Paint.net is a nice little tool. I wouldnt use it for anything too complex myself, although the new version which was recently release has some serious improvements. Suppose the best thing about it is that its free πŸ™‚

I find the UI of the GIMP /better/. There’s a learning curve, that’s all.

    Fair enough πŸ™‚
My problem is that 9 times out of 10 I want to do simple things like cropping images etc., which tools like PhotoShop and Fireworks make incredibly easy, whereas The Gimp makes me jump through hoops

Stop being a cheap git, put your hand in your pocket and buy Photoshop or Fireworks πŸ˜‰

Paintshop seems to be fairly good. Cheap enough from what I recall and powerful.

I empathize with that sentiment and have just discovered
the GimpLite Quickies tutorial. I haven’t gone through it yet but it seems to cover the the simple things so I pass it on.

sorry, my quote was cropped. The sentiment being often wanting “to do simple things like cropping images etc., which tools like PhotoShop and Fireworks make incredibly easy, whereas The Gimp makes me jump through hoops”

Pixel is a nice, cheap alternative.

If all you want to do is crop, resize, retouch images, or screen grab, and you want it all for FREE… then look at IRFANVIEW.
    see http://www.irfanview.com/
It does much more, Sharpen, Blur, Adobe 8BF, Filter Factory, Filters Unlimited, etc, Batch conversion, Cut/crop, Multimedia player.
I use it all the time, and love it.
Sure I use the Gimp on Linux, and photoshop on Winblows, but Irfanview is the tool I use the most.
    Plus FREE is good.
