Linux on your iPod

November 12, 2005 by Michele Neylon 2 Comments

I don’t even own an iPod, but I still find the fascination and fixation that people have with them to be quite hard to avoid.

So if you are not content with your iPod doing what it does you can install iPodLinux on it.
Why would you want to?
I asked myself the same question – it’s just an mp3 player after all. Why on earth would you want to install a proper operating system on it? The answer after all is in the actuall question.
If you put a proper operating system on the device you take it to the next level as it were. It is no longer a mere toy, but can become a powerful device. You need to be realistic about it though. If you are using an iPod nano it’s still going to be damned small no matter what way you look at it.
The iPod Nano, for example, is tiny. Some people would say that it is cute. I’d probably grunt in agreement and look down at my fingers. My fingers are not deformed, but they are not dainty, so I’ve never been much of a fan for devices with tiny keyboards or user interfaces – remember those watch calculators?
However, no matter how small it might be shoving an OS on an iPod does open up some new and interesting possibilities.
Want to play Doom on an iPod? Now you can.
