Handing Back the Keys to the old House and Moving on

After 13 years (give or take) I’ve finally said goodbye to the house that I used to called home. This afternoon I removed the last of my possessions and handed back the keys. While I’d moved into the new house over a week ago, it was only today that I finally got the last of my stuff out of the old house.

Will I miss the old house? Probably in some ways as I was used to its foibles.

Now I am 100% in the new house and there’s no turning back (not that there was much chance of that once I’d signed the purchase agreement!).

At the moment the new house is a bit of a disaster. I’ve managed to get the kitchen under control (more or less) but the sitting room is a mess. I’m still surrounded by boxes and more boxes. And to add to the chaos the rubbish and recycling bins weren’t collected this week!

Over the next few days I have to try and get as much stuff out of the sitting room and either into one of the spare rooms or somewhere else. The issue for the next couple of weeks is a fundamental lack of shelving and cupboard space, as the new fitted bookcases etc., aren’t ready yet. Once I get all the shelving put in I shouldn’t have any trouble finding proper homes for all my books and I’m really looking forward to that!

The entire moving house saga has been filled with ups and downs. Overall it’s been great, but I’ve had days where I’ve felt like I was staring into an abyss. It’s funny, as at one point I used to move home once every 6 to 12 months, though that was a long time ago and I was younger and a lot more energetic.

However there are a lot of positives. The new kitchen hob is a joy to cook with and having a dishwasher has made at least one household chore practically vanish! Unfortunately the combination washer and drier isn’t working properly. It seems to be happy to wash clothes just fine, but the drying part simply does not work. As it’s about 15 years old I’m not sure that it’s even worth repairing. For now I’ll dry clothes like I’ve done for the last 10+ years and get on with my life! (I don’t have enough space for a drier, so that’s simply not an option)

In the process of moving all my stuff I rediscovered a load of things that I hadn’t seen for a long time, as well as managing to find a few documents that I thought I’d lost completely. I’ve also started developing a new relationship with my possessions. I’ve got too many. I need to trim it all down and get it under control. So over the last couple of weeks I’ve been doing my utmost to offload books and other things that I no longer need in my life. Hopefully I’ll be able to continue doing that with all the other stuff I seem to have filled my life with. I can at least try!
