WordPress 2 has been released, so the big question now is whether to upgrade immediately or wait until things settle down.
As I use quite a few plugins here I’ve decided to setup a test blog on one of my spare domains. I can then, hopefully, test plugins etc., before taking “the plunge”. (Don’t expect to see anything interesting over on that domain by the way 🙂 )
The WordPress developers have provided a list of plugins that are meant to work with the new version, so I’ll be working my way through my own list.
I haven’t exactly been wowed by my first impressions of WordPress 2. Yes there is that Ajax interface for posting, but that’s more aesthetic than functional. There maybe other functionality “under the hood” that I am not aware of, so I’ll reserve judgement.

Just updated mine over the past couple of hours. I use about 10 plugins but the majority of the crucial ones were on the list (including contact form and falbum). One of the things I’m most pleased to see is the live preview of how the post will look like. Found it tough to work out spacing before and had to go back and forth tweaking.

there are some important improvements in terms of everyday use & back end stuff so plugins should be much easier & faster to write.
Things that stick out as affecting me instantly: the ping delay I was getting when making a post was very annoying, that’s been removed, and the addition of image/file upload to the rich text editor on the write post, and the new user roles functionality will be good for managing tcal users. that said, I’m definately holding off at least until the dust settles on this one. Mainly I’ll be concerned about my hacked to death theme falling over. And I’m very happy with my anti spam stuff at the moment, afraid to rock the boat on it.
I found this what’s new list very informative:

Danger – thanks for the input. I’ll be examining that link very carefully 🙂
I’m currently working my way through the list of plugins and seeing which ones that I *need* work and which ones don’t. The “rewrite titles” plugin seems to be working perfectly, though the site where I got it is no longer online
Anthony – the post preview could be handy. I’m going to have to see about themes as well before I attempt an upgrade..

just threw caution to the wind, backed up and did it. Went fine, all my plugins are working.

I may take the plunge later this week if I have the time

It seems the backend has been completely overhauled and for that reason alone, the upgrade is worthwile.
This is a major release alright but I’m confident it’ll go smoothly for most people who don’t have too much customization in their blog.
Good upgrading, everyone!
