Wanted – Irish Bloggers Who Make Money

March 31, 2007 by Michele Neylon 8 Comments

Irish Internet Association
As part of the Irish Internet Association‘s annual congress, we at Blacknight are sponsoring one of the afternoon sessions. The title of the session is “Can you make money out of Blogs and Podcasts”, so it’s pretty broad.
If you make money via your site ie. through monetisation with Adsense, Amazon or any of the other affilliate / partner solutions let me know. It would be interesting to see what people are doing.

    Hello Michele 🙂
I would be happy to provide you with any information that could help. I have more than one blog that generates daily revenue.

I choose not to “monetise” my blog with ads, because I find it offensive to the eyes and readers alike, but I do regularly get job offers and random reqeusts for consulting via my blog.
But what’s most directly relevant I guess, is that I managed to get about 30k worth of free stuff directly via my blog in the last year alone, (most significantly, I got 25k worth of free hardware from Sun, and a free all-expenses paid trip to San Francisco, just for blogging). Does that count? I also get paid to blog, on behalf of Joost, in the Joost corporate blog, it’s part of my job, does that count?
Like open-source development, I believe that most of the good benefits are indirect, things don’t have to be directly monetised for significant benefits to acrue. But the premise of your question here seems to be that they don’t count. Making money via partnerships, ads and all that just isn’t for all of us. There are excellent other ways to make money out of blogs which really suit some of us 🙂

Will Revenue be in the audience during this presentation? That affects how we define the monetisation of content.

@Colm – Actual monetisation is what I’m interested in. A lot of bloggers get work, interviews etc., via their blogs and thus improve their earnings etc., but the focus is on tangible earnings
@Bernie – Well nobody has to divulge exact figures and if people would prefer to contact me privately via email I will understand

I make a wee bit of money from my two blogs using Adsense and text link ads, and also the occasional photography job.
Besides the above, I recently sold a photo for use in a magazine advert. The proceeds of which will go a long way towards paying for my annual hosting bill.
Income Tax is a killer though, as is the US Dollar exchange rate.

    Banner ads?…

I’m trying out banner ads on single page view of posts and normal link ads on the summary pages. I think it looks naff* but I’ll leave it for a week and see how it works out. A few people have asked is adsense worth it, am I making money with it and …

I make some money using google adsence, I have heard that there are better options that generate more revenue but I personally don’t think a few cents more on your CPM is worth an annoying flashy banner ad even though it generates more click throughs
