I’ve always loved bookshops. Not just ones stuffed with new books, but also old ones. Used books. Books with a history. Books that have had a life. Books where you are, somehow, connecting at some level with the previous owner or owners who has long past. That owner could be a personal friend, an acquaintance, a family member, a celebrity or simply a random person who owned the book at some point in the past.
Books are wonderful.
They’re more than just the words on a page. They’re so so much more. Their scent. The feeling. The font. The binding.
A great bookshop can bring you all that and so much more.
I’m currently in Los Angeles and I made a point of going to The Last Bookstore.
It’s a magical place for booklovers, The downstairs area is pretty big and offers a good selection of new and used books.
However it’s when you go upstairs that you really enter the labyrinth.
The place is packed with books and some of the areas are just plain quirky. And I love it!
While you can splurge on some of the newest releases or even delve into the collectible and antiquarian books, you can also opt for discounted new and used books. There’s even a huge $1 wall!
I just hope that bookshops like this one are still around for many years to come!
