One of the things that has always bothered me is collections in supermarkets.
I have no issue with someone rattling a tin (or bucket) outside a shop, but I really don’t like the way they get people collecting at the cash registers. They insist on packing your bags even if you aren’t using any, or don’t want them to and then you feel embarrassed and have to give them your loose change.
Robert Synnott says
Fortunately, this doesn’t seem to happen at Lidl. No bag packing, you see.
Ken McGuire says
This has to be one of my ultimate hates at a supermarket, especially my local one.
It’s also one of the reasons I use my laser card while food shopping – no wallet, no notes, no change.
I just have to beat them to the packing is all…
Michele Neylon says
@Robert – maybe they don’t let them? If that’s the case I’ll be shopping there more often in the future!
@Ken – whether you have the change or not I don’t see why you should be forced to feel obliged to donate or even to avoid donating…
hostyle says
Don’t give them anything and make sure to say why. One in a hundred actually cares about your shopping and packs it in any sort of non-haphazard way (and they are the only ones that deserve some money for it). The rest are idiots and – judging by the way they pack my shopping – most likely still have their parents tie their shoelaces for them. I’ve had broken eggs, broken bottles, sharp heavy objects bore their way through a loaf of bread – all because some fool at a shop is looking for a quick buck for doing pittance.
You could always do the bulk of your groceries online and get it delivered to your door. Seems to be slowly becoming more widespread here.
Michele Neylon says
@hostyle – I’ve been lucky with the breakages so far, though I know what you mean.
The problem with shopping online is that you have to plan it… I like the actual experience of choosing the cut of meat etc., from the butchery counter in my local SuperQuinn

myself and a group of friends are doing bag packing in tesco arklow on sat 5th april, we are raising money for an animal shelter which receives no government funding! if someone does not want to donate money to the cause i will have no problem with them not donating at the end of the day if you dont want to donate thats your business if your not a big enough person to stand up for yourself at a supermarket till the i dont think youll make it very far in life! how petty are you to come on the net and moan about it? these idiots as you call them are only doing their part to raise money for something they belive in!! do you really think they enjoy packing your bags!! next time just stop and think about it for a moment, before slagging people off who are only trying to help!!
