Nokia N95 Quick Review

August 8, 2007 by Michele Neylon 10 Comments

Nokia N95
The Nokia N95 is a thing of beauty.
It’s got all those funky features that every geek dreams of:

  • GPS
  • Bluetooth
  • Wifi
  • 3G
  • MMS
  • SMS
  • Camera

And you can make phone calls too !!
It’s also got a radio and a few other little gizmos that make it a fun piece of kit.
Paul and I decided last Friday that enough was enough and that we’d simply buy ourselves new phones, so we did!
It’s a really neat device. Yes it has got terrible battery life and the memory card isn’t the biggest at 1 gigabyte (though I still remember using PCs with less space on their hard drives a couple of years ago ….)
Krystian has an older model (not sure which one) so he’s been trying to persuade me to load lots of cute bits of software onto my new toy, though I haven’t actually got round to adding anything as yet.
If you’re a blogger you should like the free software that comes with it – “Life blog“. I haven’t tested it with WordPress, but Movable Type 4 supports it, as do other SixApart products and services.
You can also download a free podcast reader from Nokia, though it doesn’t integrate properly with the browser ie. RSS feeds don’t get automatically handled by it, which is a pity
Paul goes into some detail about the features and their technical specs, so I won’t πŸ™‚
The kind of things that really interest me, however, are native GPS support. I spend a lot of my time trying to get to meetings in towns and cities that I don’t know too well, so if I have some semi-decent maps installed this will save me a lot of time and headaches (driving in circles round Mullingar brings back “fond” memories).
Now I’m off to get more ringtones …..

So, you aren’t going to hold out for an iPhone then?
I’ve heard a lot of good things about the N95, and would be mildly tempted myself – I’m sure you’ll let us all know if you still love it after a couple of weeks of real world use?

I’ve been having ongoing issues with my other phone for some time – mainly related to things like the bluetooth being flaky as hell and having to remove the battery every now and again in order to regain functionality.
The N95 ships with a more recent release of Symbian from what I can gather and seems to have slightly better management of applications and memory use, so hopefully I won’t want to throw it out the window in frustration!

Now that you’ve gone out and bought it, have you checked out the E90? Holy cow. N95 with 2 screens, full keyboard and far superior battery life.

The E90 looks cute, but is it as much fun?

I have an N95 over here, and find it to be a great phone. Only major issue is battery life.
Reports I heard are that the E90 is like the N95 except for business. Battery life is apparently far better, and the QWERTY keyboard is going to make a difference (the numeric keyboard on the N95 is a pain in the rocks for web surfing IMO).
The only thing I’d look for extra on the N95 is touch screen and a stylus. BTW check to see if your firmware has an update – the GPS was complete cack until FW updated.
Screen on N95 definitely one of the best I’ve seen. Lots of new models coming out of Nokia that are starting to change the way we use our phones. Things are certainly looking up for mobile IMO – let’s hope the operators catch on and start letting us use mobile the way it was intended.

Where would I go to get a firmware update?

    nokia website
    OR
install pc-suite (in your favourite Windows flavour πŸ™‚ ) and there’s an option to update firmware.
Either way I think you’ll probably need a windows based machine to do it.

    That would explain it πŸ™‚
I haven’t booted into windows on my home desktop in weeks, my laptop runs linux only, so I guess I’d have to do it in work where I’m still running windows

I got N73 and I am very happy with that toy. Our mobiles have the same OS – Symbian v.3. I persuaded you to install some nice stuff like divx/avi player (there are at least 2 applications – DIVX Player and Smart Movie with AVI/DIVX converter to the Nokia QVGA resolution), nice Jukebox player (it is able to play internet streamed radio programs, so having a 3G data sim card you can walk and listen to your favourite program – like I am trying to do and to listen Polish radio while I am on archaeological dig.
There is also a good e-mail program Profimail but it is not for free, and you can get only demo, which is still useful, and let you to transfer via bluetooth or IRDA applications (which normally you are not allowed to send).
