More spammy link requests

October 10, 2005 by Michele Neylon Leave a Comment

Am I the only person who finds reciprocal link requests generated by automated mailers and nasty little spam robots annoying?

Over the last 3 days I’ve received several – all to webmaster@ addresses which I normally do not activate to avoid this kind of junk.
Here’s one example:

To the owner of translationresearch.com,
Good day,
We have just finished viewing your website and found it quite
enjoyable. Your site has been considered for Link Inclusion in my site.
Taking the intiative action i have already added a link to your site at

URL-www.translationresearch.com
Description-TranslationResearch.com is the new home of the Ring of

translators and researchers in the field of translation and
cross-cultural communication.

other Cross-promotion ideas, please email us at
onlinemarketing@languagesoutthere.com
In exchange I would request a link to the following website:
------------------------------------------------

Description: blah blah blah
or you can use the following HTML code

XYZ - blah blah.

------------------------------------------------
I am confident that this type of exchange will maximize the value of
the link exchange. Please contact us if you have any concerns on the
link exchange. Looking forward to hearing from you.

link details.

Best regards,
Email: onlinemarketing@XXXX.com
XXXXX.com (Team)
If you never want to receive an email from me or my company again,
please send us a reply with subject "REMOVE" if you wish to be remove
from our list in compliance to the spam law...

A couple of things to note:

  1. The spammed domain (ie. my site) actively accepts links
  2. They never visited the site (see above)
  3. Note the reference to “spam law”
  4. The email address targetted is always a “role” account

Personally I find this kind of junk annoying, but what I find even more annoying is that there are software vendors out there encouraging people to spew this junk on other website owners.
Improving your site’s ranking in Google et al is important and one of the factors that can contribute to an increase in PR is reciprocal linking. However spamming people in order to get links is counter-productive.
