Blogging popularity contest?

I found a couple of interesting references to the Irish Blogs topsite/list I launched the other day via technorati
Some people are very positive about my latest little project, whereas others seem to think it a waste of time 🙂
Youngirelander seems to be missing the point entirely. Nobody ever said it was intended to be a list of every single Irish blog and nobody is going to lay any doubt on how popular some blogs maybe.
If you don’t have the tracking code how is anybody meant to know how popular your blog is?
There is no universal way to rank any website’s popularity using a uniform third party system.
Alexa, for example, can give some information, but it is restricted to reporting information reported by users of their plugin.
Maybe some of us seem to have a fixation with Google PR, technorati and other things, but that might be because we work in an industry where those things count.
If you aren’t interested in them and don’t want your site listed then nobody is going to force you.
As I’ve already pointed out the toplist cannot track certain things at present, such as RSS feeds.
Does that render it worthless? I don’t think so, but you are entitled to your own opinion.
I think my original post announcing the site explains why I set it up.

  1. How am I missing the point?
You say: “Nobody ever said it was intended to be a list of every single Irish blog and nobody is going to lay any doubt on how popular some blogs maybe.”
Then how can it claim to be an “Irish blogs topsite list”? It will be a case of which blogs are most popular – which have the HTML code in question.
The way the list is compiled is flawed in my opinion.

  2. I think its a rather good idea, well worth a try anyhow. I would think some people will use it as a irish based score board too.

  3. “Young Irelander – If you think it is so flawed would you care to suggest something better?”
How about a blog directory which also categorises blogs and which allows others to rate which blogs they like? Planet of the Blogs and Irishblogs.ie have a list of Irish blogs but it’s hard to get through.
I would prefer a more easily accessible list as opposed to a popularity contest designed to feed the egos of certain Irish bloggers.
Just my two cents on the matter…

  4. “Maybe some of us seem to have a fixation with Google PR, technorati and other things, but that might be because we work in an industry where those things count.”
Then, the list of the most popular blogs will definitely be of interest to you, Michele. I see why you set it up.
As you say, no one is compelled to join, so the title “Top 100 Irish Blogs” is hardly accurate (100 haven’t even signed up).
