WordPress Revisited

April 26, 2006 by Michele Neylon 14 Comments

I just installed one of the nightly builds on a new blog and it all works perfectly. No issues with permalinks. No weirdness with templates (at least not with the ones I’ve tried so far). No strange things with posts.
The new features that will be included in the upcoming release are not going to be groundbreaking, but they will improve some areas.
I haven’t been keeping up with the wp-testers list, but from some basic initial testing it looks like they’ve sped up quite a bit of the code, so the page I am currently viewing (for editing a new post) should render in about half the time.

It’s about time they sorted out some of the performance issues with WP. It was getting to the point where I could barely use it if the server was busy. what was the release number on the nightly build you are using?

Just upgraded myself and installed the customisable dashboard plugin that gets rid of the wordpress rss feeds. Also you might be interested in the following plugins headzoo.com which has an edit in place function like what flickr uses and kashou.net/blog/inline-ajax-comments which displays comments on your main page without the need to go to the single post page.

Liam – Do you have a link to the dashboard plugin?

    Liam
Thanks. I may look into that. Personally I like wp-tiger, as it gives me a much cleaner interface, though it may not be compatible with the latest beta

I installed it about 3 days ago, but got rid of it again because I couldn’t get used to it, its funny how you get so used to something. But it is really nice, looking forward to the release of this too http://www.brokenkode.com/archives/shuttle-wave-one/

That is a really slick looking dashboard plugin! Certainly would be a better interface for your blogger package Michele

Another great service I came across on Monday was letmeparty.com which uses the xmlrpc function of wordpress and allows you update your blog via sms. Just 15c a pop.

Isn’t that a wee bit limiting? 🙂 You can only fit a certain number of characters in an sms, so unless you are going to be posting stuff like “I b l8 4 meeting cu l8r”

Well you would fit a few sentances, perfect for a mini post, must try it with two texts later and see if it posts them together. But I do see great value in the service for real-world bookmarking, e.g a shop that sells books/magazines cheaper, rate food at restaurants live and share this information woth other bloggers etc..

If it was expanded on it probably could have potential. I generally use macker’s sms script for sending sms if I’m at home or in the office
