If you have the inclination to write your blog from your desktop as opposed to via the web interface then you can. There maybe reasons why you would want to do this, though personally I am so used to using the web interface I can’t see too much point.
Apple users can choose from a number of applications, including WordPressdash.
Windows users could use Zempt
On Ubuntu I’m using BloGTK which is described as:
BloGTK is a weblog client that allows you to post to your weblog from Linux without the need for a separate browser window.
It’s not bad, but it won’t give you the same functionality that you get from the web interface.
To set it up with your blog all you really need to do is give it the URL to your XML RPC file. On a WordPress blog that will probably be located at http://yourblog/xmlrpc.php
Choose the “Movable Type” blogging system in your settings and you should be set.
It allows you to post to one category at a time, which is a bit restrictive.
Although you can add links and images from within its GUI it’s not as intuitive as the web interface and doesn’t seem to recognise which text you want to use as the link.
There is a builtin preview area which you may find helpful.

Looks to me (from the screenshots – I don’t have a blog) like they all only support limited HTML input and nothing else. I find humane text editors like Textile and MarkDown much easier to use for quick text input.

As I said, it has limitations 🙂
I had originally tried to post this entry from my desktop, but it made a mess of all the HTML and links, so I ended up posting it as a draft, revising it and then publishing it
