I was away for a week up in Donegal.
While the weather in Donegal might not have been that nice it seems like the weather in Carlow was a lot more pleasant.
So when I came back yesterday evening I found that the greenhouse had been more or less taken over by my tomato plants (again!) .
It’s a great big verdant mess:
Some of the tomato plants are now so tall that they’re pressing up against the glass ceiling of the greenhouse. Last year the tomato plants got out of control and were a total disaster – essentially strangling themselves. I’ve been trying to keep them more under control this year, but I’m fighting a losing battle! I’ll have to try to trim them back or I’ll run into serious issues as they start fruiting (some already have!)
However, while I’m obviously struggling to keep things under control, I am happy that I have the problem. Last year when I was away I had to rely on friends to water the greenhouse for me and that was far from ideal. This year the watering system I have in place provides a fairly constant flow of water during daylight hours. It’s definitely helping with the overall growth I’m seeing and hopefully I won’t have some of the issues you get from sporadic watering.
Also the garlic crop is ready, though it’s not overly exciting:
I used the vegtrug raised bed planter for the garlic and I’m not sure if it was the best choice. The bulbs are fairly small and look a bit sad. I’ll put them to dry in the greenhouse in the next day or so, but for the next 24 hours I’m going to let them take advantage of the rare Irish sunny day!
With that raised bed completely empty it raises the question of what I should plant in there next. I quite like the idea of something seasonal, but having something that will be there permanently is also quite appealing.
Choices, choices!
