South African Chutney

When I travel to a new country I like to explore the supermarkets. I have a habit of picking up local delicacies or simply popular foods. Assuming of course that they aren’t perishable and will fit in my bag. So when I go to Spain I’ll pick up a few tins of seafood as well as chorizo and lomo. When I’m in France I might pick up mustards and paté, while in the US I tend to opt for flavoured coffees.

But what do you grab in South Africa?

Well one of the items the locals would recommend is Mrs. Balls’ chutney, which comes in a number of versions, though the “hot” one seems to be the most popular.

Last year when I was in South Africa I picked up a couple of jars of it thinking that I wouldn’t see it in Europe, nevermind in Ireland. But I was wrong.

SuperValu in Midleton stocks it as you can see from the photo I snapped the other weekend!

Ah well..

At least I won’t have to travel thousands of miles to restock my pantry!
