Sky Expands HD Offering

Sky are expanding the number of HD (high definition) channels on offer and will be adding Sky Movies Premiere and FX to the lineup.

It’s still not a good reason to make the move as you end up seriously out of pocket:

  • Sky HD box is yours. It costs EUR299, but if it breaks you have to pay for fixing it / replacing it
  • Install fee of EUR45 regardless of whether you’re an existing Sky customer or not
  • EUR15 monthly fee

So if you were to make the switch now you’d end up paying out EUR344 in one time fees and an extra EUR180 in subscriptions per year. That’s a total of EUR524 in year one.

I’m already paying out over EUR50 a month to Sky for Sky Movies which I rarely watch.

  1. what’s the alternative? we’ve just got a new HD tv but we’re on cable NTL at the moment. We need to find out if we’re allowed to get a minidish by our property management company, but if we can’t how else can we get the HD channels?
    Oh and can you recommend a good stand? will need to accommodate surround sound, decoder, wii, 360 and maybe a PS3 in the future, as well as a 40″ widescreen tv

    I wouldn’t mind paying if I felt I was getting “value”
    With regard to the stand – I’ll let you know once mine arrives. I’m in a similar position in terms of devices 🙂

  3. No way I’m paying ‘Sky tax’. I’m waiting for the launch of Freesat(.co.uk) any day now and that will fulfill my HD needs plenty. For a pittance compared to Sky!

  4. I think I’ll wait until every channel is HD and it’s the default. I get to watch so little tv these days I’m certainly not paying a premium to watch it!
    We bought a sideboard from Argos for the new flatscreen, but most of the reason for getting it is so it’ll be out of reach of baby’s hands for a few more years. (or maybe months, he’s a smart kid!)

  5. You don’t what you are missing. Sky Arts, Lost and Prison break on HD… awesome pictures (but make sure you use the HD cable…) If you bought a HD TV you might as well go the whole hog…
