Discussion of IDN, ccTLDs and new TLDs – DomainFest

February 2, 2007 by Michele Neylon 13 Comments

A panel of experts drawn from several quarters led a very compact and intense panel session on IDN, ccTLDs and new TLDs.
Most panel discussions I’ve attended have either run on too long or dragged a bit. In the case of yesterday’s session the opposite was the truth.
The panel was comprised of Tina Dam (ICANN), who gave a brief update on IDN. She was followed by Hiro Hotta (JPRS) who gave us a lot of information and statistics on the Japanese experience with IDN to date. Pinky Brand (.mobi) covered the progress and future prospects of .mobi. Leona Chen (.asia) went through the prelaunch information for .asia, which looks like it’s going to be very exciting, while Matt Serlin (MarkMonitor) covered some of the general aspects of ccTLDs.
After their presentations there was a Q & A session, which allowed people like me to throw as many queries as we wanted at a panel of experts – a great opportunity !

I think the launch of .asia is going to be very interesting. Any mention of prices or buying restrictions?
Hope your enjoying the trip. πŸ˜‰

Pricing wasn’t mentioned, though I was interested in asking them about restrictions. I’ll be getting more info …

What topics were covered during the ccTLD discussion Michele? Any talk of alternative roots when ICANT was in the house?

There’s been a lot of talk here about new TLDs and there’s a buzz around some of the new toys. No mention that I recall of alternate roots
Gavin – Keep an eye on my domain blog …

If you mean Eurid then no, but if you mean speculators etc., then yes
    *cough*
I’m currently sitting two seats away from one that you have discussed with me more than once in the past
    *cough*

EURid seems to be keeping a low profile atm as it is being “audited” by an external company and its relationship with the European Commission is being examined. Though it probably won’t do any good.
Also it seems that gov.ie will be taking a closer look at .ie to prevent squatters/speculators. There is a very nasty bit in the new legislation published today that could be used to delete speculative and misleading domains.

Well? What questions did you throw at them? There is no way you just sat there and listened.

I asked about trademarks in .asia sunrise. I was also speaking to Leona about this yesterday evening. A lot of that stuff is still not cut and dried.
