Twitter Is Dumb – More Bubble 2.0 Junk

I’m really sick of all these web 2.0 fanboys.

It’s like the dotcom boom with slightly older people, or something.

Don’t get me wrong. Some of the web applications and services are really cool AND useful.
They may even have a business plan behind them so that they’ll actually be around in 6 months time ….

Twitter (it doesn’t even deserve a link!) simply isn’t.

It’s probably the biggest waste of time I’ve come across in years.

Does anyone really give a damn what other people are doing all the time.

“I just got up”

“I made coffee”
“My girlfriend is having morning sickness”

– stop the lights!! Headline news!

Most people’s daily lives are boring.

While we may all do interesting things a lot of what we do is incredibly boring.
This is why I own a DVD player, a TV, books etc.,

Someone telling the world that they are sitting on a bus isn’t going to improve my life. If I wanted to know where someone was I could ring them, email them, IM them .. you get the idea..

If I want to know what you are planning to do I can check your calendar / diary (if you have a public one)

Do we really need twitter?

I don’t think so.

Others tend to agree

Though all the little fanboys think it’s so “cool”
Guys – reality check please.
Just because it’s got a “web 2.0” stamp on it does not make it “cool” “useful” or anything else.

If it was “hip” to jump of cliffs would you all do it?

  1. I think you are taking Twitter, and its fans, a bit too seriously. Anyone claiming Twitter is game/life changing is a bit over excited, nothing more.
I haven’t seen anyone claiming they should base a business on it, change the way they organise their lives or even that they should ditch IM, email or their blog for it.
The rest of us on Twitter though are having a bit of fun, kicking back maybe, seeing how it goes. I’ve spent the past few days connecting with the Irish blogosphere better than I ever did through, funnily, blogs.
As for the people who own Twitter they may have a plan, they may not. They might just be trying a whim out and seeing how it goes. No harm in that, Ev isn’t poor and the other guys get paid a salary.
I just think a bit of fun and experimentation is a good thing, it doesn’t always have to have a reason.

  2. ZOMG! It’s like snap preview but totally different.
Can i like totally put this on my bebo? That would be so A.
On a serious note, it’s an cross blog shoutbox really is it? It looks like it needs to be maintained quite extensively to keep it any bit active.
This is certainly not for me. I have better things to be doing in my free time than looking at a square featuring people posing and telling me what they’re doing.

  3. I like Michele more because he likes Twitter less than anything he has seen in 2007.
I have requested a Cranky Geeks (CG) category for the 2008 edition of the Irish Blog Awards because we need more authoritative bitching in the Irish blogosphere. The short list for the 2008 IBA CG award includes both Michele and Adrian Weckler. To John Handelaar and Gaddo Benedetti–don’t delay! Take down Twitter too and claim your spaces in the newly emerging category.

@michele tiny view point of mine; most of what u say is true. but you are not getting it. in our tiny world I know who is resigning from comp X or who is on way to my county 2day I HAVE no more time to spare either but I say take another look. its a people tool not an ego tool

If X resigned from company Y I will hear about it if I should hear about it. If I know the person well enough to care they’ll either have told me about it or mentioned it on their blog / website / email or whatever.
I will stick to my opinion – useless clutter

  6. Michele,
You comments on Twitter seems to have gone down the wrong way with Damien.
The wrath of the Irish Internet community will be upon you!
    😉

  7. Like most web2.0 sites I joined, then quickly lost interest, though a lot of my contacts on google talk use the “tagline” (i.e. they change “Available” to something else) to the same effect.

  8. Michelle,
Indeed, however Damien, in all his wisdom, seems to have “banned” me from commenting on his posts.
    Either that or it’s a software “glitch”…
    😉

  9. sure it’s dumb! 😉 The best way to think about it is equivalent to IRC chatter. totally trivial stuff, and easy to filter out if you’re not interested. just pay no attention.
Is it the “twitter boxes” that people are putting on their blogs that are annoying you? they are a case of missing the point, alright, but I’d say they’re marginally less annoying than the ads on most blogs.

  10. (ps: talking of which, any chance you can tone down the ‘**Have a look at this:** Irish Webmaster Chat! Swap tips and tricks with fellow webmasters’ ads on your RSS feed? it can be a little distracting, especially when it appears syndicated on a planet site. Take a look at the ‘Setting VIM to be the Default Editor’ post over on http://planetilug.linux.ie/ for an example.)

  11. Justin – I’ll have a play with the settings on that. It’s a wee bit dumb 🙂
In an ideal world it should “know” when it’s in a planet and not display …

  12. I don’t understand why people are getting so hot headed about twitter. If you like it, use it. If you want to know what others are doing, subscribe to their feed. If you don’t like it, don’t use it. If you don’t want to know what others are doing don’t subscribe.
I don’t comment on the ‘clutter’ in my next door neighbour house because I don’t see it. Why? well because it doesn’t interest me.

  13. Michele – absolutely. I’m not complaining about your post as you’re entitled to your opinion. All you did was express an opinion. I’m just surprised how some people are getting emotional about it.

It’s kind of amusing to watch 🙂
If they were all this passionate about politics the world would be a better place!

  15. I see John Edwards, would-be Democratic Presidential candidate is a twit-ter. Doesn’t it speak volumes that a man who aspires to the highest office in the greatest country in the world has time to waste on such an insignificance…

  16. I checked it out for a while the other night, seems like a waste of time to me. I just can’t see the advantages to it. I must not be ‘getting it’

  17. I hate ever the this Name – Twitter. Its freaking me out.
And Yes – Twitter is designed for dumb attention wh0r4s. Its just useless.
